How do you help students build a balanced college list?
By helping students aim for their dream school, reach school, target and safety schools.
What factors do you consider besides GPA and test scores?
I consider the student’s aptitude & abilities as well as extracurricular activities, special program involvement, paid/unpaid work experience & community service. I also consider anticipated financial aid opportunities also allow me to give students and parens a better understanding of what to expect at different types of institutions.
How do you help students brainstorm personal statement topics?
I help students think of their experiences and how they can frame their statements around those experience to highlight the type of learner and strengths they can bring to make a diverse campus.
How do you communicate progress with parents?
I can communicate progress via emails.
I use the FAFSA estimator, ScholarshipUniverse, CalKIDS & many more search tools online as well as a regional Riverside county specific Google Sheets scholarship list that I have compiled across the years. I am also a former Gates Scholarship Recipient.
How do you help students search for scholarships?
I would advise the student to perhaps focus their efforts on the CSU system that has guaranteed admission to the 16 non-impacted campuses or maybe even the community college system if financial aid limitations present themselves. I would show the student the portrait of an admit for the reach school versus the safety school.
A student has a 2.8 GPA, but wants to attend a highly selective university. How would you advise them?
A student has excellent grades but no extracurricular involvement. How do you strengthen their application?
I would dig for any paid or unpaid work experience or other ways the student can shine. For Example some students perform unpaid labor such as babysitting/caregiving or perhaps help out with a family business.
What do you think families misunderstand most about college admissions?
The variations in costs but also there are so many special programs and grants that don't need to be paid back as well as tuition reimbursement programs.
