  • Christina Szot

Christina has many years of tutoring experience, working with a wide range of students from elementary through college. She also has experience supporting students with special needs in both group and one-on-one settings. When not tutoring, she enjoys hiking, reading, trail running, and mountain biking. She loves exploring with her boyfriend and their lovable, silly dog, Loki. One memorable experience for Christina was tutoring a student with learning disabilities who struggled to consistently recall sight words. Some sessions he remembered them, while in others he forgot. Christina realized the difficulty stemmed from a lack of confidence, as the student would give up before trying. To build his confidence, she introduced star stickers, placing one on a card each time he recalled a word correctly. Over time, the student could see one, two, or even three stickers on a card, which showed him that he did know the word. This small but meaningful strategy helped him believe in his ability and encouraged him to try rather than give up.

  • Fernando Resendez

Fernando Resendez has an extensive background in university-level math and physics courses, as well as years of experience studying collaboratively in pairs and groups. He understands that online instruction requires flexibility and creativity. For example, while teaching K–8 students about conductivity, he helped set up interactive tables outside the Bourns College of Engineering at UCR, where students were captivated by the hands-on demonstrations.Fernando ensures that students master concepts by exposing them to problems in multiple formats. For instance, when teaching factoring, he introduces equations with one, two, or three terms, with varying leading coefficients, so students learn to break problems down into fundamental concepts regardless of how they are presented. He considers a session successful when a student leaves with the confidence to solve problems that once felt foreign—or even better, when they can explain the solution to someone else.

  • Tyler Fowler

Tyler Fowler asks his students individually every day, “Did you learn something? Did you have fun? Are you excited to come back?” He believes that a quality learning environment should include all three of these elements. Mr. Fowler has a deep love for teaching, especially in the subjects of math and computer science. He discovered his passion for education after working on an application that utilized blockchain technology. Inspired by that experience, he wanted to share his knowledge with others and found a fulfilling home and career in teaching. While teaching AP Physics, Tyler Fowler’s students were learning 2D kinematics. Although they had strong algebra skills and could solve equations, they struggled to connect the equations and understand the value of expressing relationships using multiple equations. To address this, Tyler brought a set of spring-powered tennis ball launchers to the gym and drew three large circles. His students were tasked with determining the spring constant of each launcher using the different kinematic equations. The activity was both engaging and educational, providing a hands-on way for students to connect theory with practice.
