General Questions

How do I know if tutoring is needed?

Tutoring is needed if students’ questions are not being answered in class by the teacher. When those questions are never answered, the concept is never fully learned. I am dedicated to answering all those questions for students.

How do I know tutoring will help me/my student?

In my experience, all of my students have found great value in receiving tutoring with me. Whether they are struggling to understand, or are seeking a stronger grasp of the concepts, my students gain more knowledge, skills, and confidence in their math abilities. If you have specific questions about how tutoring will impact your student, I can gladly address them in an email or phone call/text.

What can a student expect from a tutoring session?

Students can receive support in many ways during their sessions, including but not limited to the following:

  • Revisiting a lesson learned in class and discussing any confusing or difficult concepts.

  • Reviewing homework, working through problems together, or reviewing incorrect work.

  • Studying together to prepare for an upcoming test. Your student has the option to also share the study guide/problem set given to them by their instructor. We can use this material to ensure your student is prepared and confident approaching the exam.

How much does your service cost?

Virtual Tutoring: $60/hour
Onsite Tutoring: $60/hour
Group Tutoring: $30/hour

What experience does Mr. Olmedo have in teaching and tutoring?

Mr. Olmedo has taught in both public and charter schools for the last six years and has tutored in Riverside County since 2014. He has taught various math courses from Algebra 1 to Calculus. During that time, he tutored hundreds of students in group, individual, and virtual settings. Countless students have benefited from working with Mr. Olmedo. They and their parents continue to recommend him to other students seeking tutoring services.

How can I/my student prepare for a tutoring session?

The best way to prepare for your tutoring session is to have an idea of what you need help with. This could be a tough lesson from class, difficult homework, missed test problems, or a study guide for the next test. You will get the most out of the time if I can identify your needs as quickly as possible. Once I know what topics to focus on, I can utilize extra practice and resources to enrich your understanding.

How are sessions tailored to the needs of each student?

One of Mr. Olmedo’s talents is being able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of all students he works with. He can understand how a student thinks about a problem and is able to identify gaps in understanding. All sessions are highly interactive, and filled with real conversations about math. Students are not lectured in these sessions. They walk through the math themselves with guidance every step of the way. Mr. Olmedo will let your student get as far as they can without assistance and then give support when needed. The goal is to help the student gain more independence in math, not more dependence on help.

Virtual Related Questions

Is tutoring only offered virtually?

I offer virtual sessions for up to 2 students at a time.

Why do families choose virtual tutoring?

This method has many advantages. No driving means no restraints on location or time- your student only needs a computer and their favorite space! Virtual tutoring is efficient for both tutor and student, saving both time and energy. I’ve found education happens best when a student is at ease and feels in control of their learning. Virtual tutoring allows them the opportunity to choose where and when they learn! It is also safe for your student. No one can join a virtual tutoring room without access granted by the tutor.
Go virtual. See the difference.

Do students maintain their focus online?

Yes. This is not virtual school. Many students have struggled with virtual school for various reasons, especially since Covid. Often, virtual classes had too many students on a call for appropriate student-teacher engagement.

Virtual tutoring is a completely different experience. With 1:1 learning, your student can engage with me and the content directly with face-to-face connection.

I ensures each session is intentionally engaging and interactive. I encourage participation from your student with questions, exploration, and even jokes. No student has had difficulty participating.

How do I/my student connect with the tutor?

Tutoring sessions are facilitated through Zoom.

After successful payment, you will receive an email confirmation with the zoom link to my virtual classroom. This will be the same link for every tutoring session in the future.

Outside of sessions, students can reach us via email, call, or text at (818) 237-6280

Do we need any equipment or to download anything?

I require the following resources at minimum:

  • Internet access

  • Computer with webcam, microphone, and speakers (most laptops are great for this)

  • Email account to access Zoom. If you do not have a Gmail account, they are free to create.

Below are additional, recommended resources:

  • Touch screen laptop or tablet

  • Stylus for on-screen annotation

Is virtual tutoring technology hard to use?

While technology can be intimidating, most people do not have any difficulty with it! It's as simple as clicking on a single link.
Of course, if any issues arise, I am ready to help troubleshoot and find other accommodations if needed.

What happens if the technology doesn’t work?

I will work to solve the issue immediately, whether that's checking wi-fi connection or switching platforms for better interfacing. If the problem can't be solved right away I will reschedule your appointment to a different time.

What about the relationship between student and tutor?

Many students say they feel just as connected to their tutor virtually as they do in person. In fact, students often feel more comfortable being in their own space and are freer to ask the questions they need addressed.

Is my student too young for virtual tutoring?

I recommend this method of tutoring for students in 6th grade and up. With each session being focused on the individual, it is just as engaging and effective as in-person tutoring. If your student can handle in-person tutoring, they can succeed in virtual tutoring.

In-Person Related Questions

Is tutoring offered In-Person?

I offer In-Person sessions if you are located within a 15 mile radius of UC Riverside. We can also meet at the UCR Science Library from 4:30pm-8pm Monday through Thursday.

Why do families choose In-Person tutoring?

In-Person learning is the most effective form of learning math. During In-Person sessions, I guide students through the rigorous concepts in math while intervening and providing hints at specific times. The conversations that I am able to have with students during In-Person sessions are rich in mathematical content and provide more insight on students’ strengths and weakness.

Do students maintain their focus In-Person?

Many of my previous students have told me that my classroom has been the only place where they were completely comfortable and can be themselves. In-Person sessions allow me to build a positive relationship with my students. My energetic personality allows me to create an environment that is fun yet professional.
