Inside the SAT & ACT: Tips, Myths, and Summer Prep

SAT & ACT Math Tips, Myths, and Our Summer Prep Options

If your student is planning to take the SAT or ACT soon, you’re probably wondering how to help them prepare especially for the math sections. At Math Man Olmedo Tutoring Center, we specialize in breaking down these high-stakes tests into something manageable, even masterable.

But here’s the thing: most parents and students don’t know what really goes into strong SAT/ACT math prep. Let’s clear up a few common questions and give you insider tips straight from our experienced instructors.

❓ SAT & ACT Math – FAQ for Parents & Students

Q: Are the SAT and ACT math sections the same?
👉 Not quite! The SAT focuses more on algebra, data analysis, and word problems, with a calculator free section included. The ACT is quicker paced, allows a calculator the whole time, and includes more geometry and trigonometry.
Tip: If your student is fast with calculations and stronger in geometry, the ACT might be a better fit.

Q: Should students memorize formulas?
👉 Yes especially for the ACT, which doesn’t provide a reference sheet like the SAT does.
Tip: Focus on memorizing area/volume formulas, slope/distance formulas, and basic trig (SOHCAHTOA).

Q: How important is time management?
👉 Extremely! Many students know how to do the math but get tripped up by time.
Tip: Practice timed drills and learn when to skip and return to tough questions later.

Q: Can guessing hurt your score?
👉 Nope! There’s no penalty for wrong answers on either test.
Tip: Always bubble something in even if it’s a guess!

Q: What’s the best way to study?
👉 Focused, targeted practice. Random YouTube videos and worksheets don’t cut it.
Tip: Use real SAT/ACT questions, review missed problems in-depth, and work with an instructor who knows the test inside and out.
