Meet Leonardo Olmedo

My Daughter needed tutoring in AP Calculus & we were both nervous about getting the right kinda help for her. Olmedo was great. He got her to understand things that the teacher could not. She went into her test feeling confident & even asked if she could go back next week!

Bio

How would you describe your tutoring style?

I describe my tutoring style as fast paced while ensuring that students are learning the concepts. I use my experience as a teacher to scaffold and provide students with practice problems to master prerequisite skills in order to find success on their current problems. A student feeling comfortable with you is key to an effective learning environment. Students need to trust that you are there to help them learn and ask them questions that will guide their learning.

What do you enjoy most about tutoring?

I enjoy working with my team of tutors that share the same passion and energy to teach students in a 1-1 and small group setting. I also enjoy working with students to find out why they struggle in math and providing them with the exercises they need to overcome those struggles.

How do you help students who feel stuck or lack confidence?

I help these students by taking a few steps back and analyzing where exactly their point of misconception is at. I consistently remind them to stop me if I am going too fast and to ask questions at any time. The pace of the tutoring session is always based on student learning not only completing an assignment for points.

What is a moment or outcome with a student that made you proud?

I have worked with some students since they were in middle school and now taking AP Calculus. The growth in their confidence and math skills has been impressive. For example, I have student that really struggled with basic foundational skills like integers and 2-step equations, but now he is thriving in his class. Most of the sessions are mainly to reinforce the concepts that he has already learned in class and we work on the rigorous problems that his teacher assigns. This specific student challenges me every session to be better.

What do you love about Math Man Olmedo Tutoring Center?

I love that I am able to provide a service to families that would not otherwise have access to it. I love that I am able to help the students in my community learn Math and build their confidence in their math skills.
